Babs Haenen (Dutch, b. 1948) is a ceramic artist living and working in Amsterdam. Haenen creates expressive sculptures that give equal importance to color, line, and form. Influenced by 20thcentury abstract painting as well as elements from the natural world, Haenen creates richly pigmented painterly compositions on slabs of porcelain. These compositions are then cut, folded and built into 3-demensional sculptures. The resulting forms often resemble vessels or geological elements, and are always imbued with a dynamic inner choreography.

Haenen’s work is in the permanent collections of many of the world’s most prestigious museums including: Museum of Fine Art, Boston; Museum of Fine Art, Houston; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Boijmans-van Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam; Frans Hals Museum, Haarlem; Museum of Contemporary Ceramic Art, Shigaraki, Japan; Carnegie Institute Museum of Art, Pittsburgh; Cooper-Hewitt Museum, New York; Museum of Art and Design, New York; and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
